Dunhill GAA

Christmas Football Tournament

More Than Hurling & Football

Like so many other clubs up and down the county, the Dunhill GAA Club’s primary goal was to offer the opportunity to play hurling and football to its community. However, and no doubt again like many other GAA clubs, Dunhill GAA Club has evolved greatly and developed its offerings immensely over the years, thanks in no small way to its vision, sub-committee structure, strong pool of volunteers, capital development, and sustainability and maintenance programmes.

Apart from the provision for the development of GAA games at both juvenile & senior levels across both codes & genders (Hurling/Camogie & Football/Ladies Football), below is an outline of fifty-plus activities that Dunhill GAA Club has been involved in and offered to its members and the wider community in recent years. The chances are many other GAA clubs are doing similar work to Dunhill’s list in their own communities, but perhaps they just haven’t paused to take stock of all their efforts. Have a look at this list and take a moment to reflect on the great work that your club is already doing.

There are 52 GAA clubs in County Waterford, but only 12 of them are part of the Healthy Club programme. The reality is that clubs are probably already doing more than they realise in relation to the Healthy Club agenda. So, the call for action is to get every GAA club in the Comhar Comaraigh Network area to sign up to become a ‘Healthy’ club in 2026. Let’s make our clubs and communities healthier together. (Rosie Murphy, Healthy Club Officer)

BUSINESS FEATURE: Barefoot Farm

Paul Ryan & Fiona Slade, Barefoot Farm

We’re Paul Ryan and Fiona Slade, and we run Barefoot Farm in the Eco Park, Dunhill, Co. Waterford. Our farm is small, hand-powered, and rooted in a simple philosophy: grow good food, care for the soil, and connect with our community.

We started Barefoot Farm in 2018. Back then, Paul was working at Waterford Airport and studying organic horticulture online, and he was just growing the odd plant in our back garden. From there, he moved to square-foot gardening, then an allotment plot, then a second plot, and finally a field in Dunhill. A visit to Kildinan Farm in Cork gave Paul the courage to ask for a work placement, and that experience shaped the way we farm today.

The name Barefoot Farm came from another sunny day, walking barefoot through Altamont Gardens. Paul felt so connected to the earth that the name just stuck.

We specialise in mixed salad leaves, with 8–10 varieties in every bag, so no two are the same. We also grow spinach, rocket, kale, and microgreens, which our chefs love. We sell our produce through Ardkeen Quality Food Store, Cove Stores, SuperValu Tramore, and supply local restaurants like Faithlegg Hotel, Union, Ni Bhrian Restaurant, Eamo & Ro, and Slice Pizza.

Everything we do is hand-sown, hand-harvested, hand-packed, and hand-delivered. We have no machinery, just us and our hand tools. It is hard work and often exhausting, but also incredibly rewarding. We compost heavily, rotate crops, and focus on soil health, because quality and integrity are at the heart of what we do. We’re currently in organic conversion, and we’re set to be fully certified by July 2026.

Looking ahead, we’d love Barefoot Farm to become a hub for health education, workshops, and community connection. With a new cabin and plans for more tunnels and collaborative projects, we’re excited for the future. We’re just two ordinary people doing what we love, feeding our community with honest, wholesome food.

COMMUNITY & SUPPORT

Boatstrand

Join us down in Boatstrand for an evening of Christmas carols held in memory of Phyllis Lenihan.

Phyllis was there from the very beginning — helping to fundraise for the Sea Safety Centre and playing a big part in many of the fundraisers that followed. She was also deeply involved in the Irish Water Safety Swim Week held each year in Boatstrand.

Let’s come together, young and old, to celebrate her memory and share in the spirit of Christmas.

Refreshments will be served in the Centre after the service — and there will be plenty of Christmas cheer to go around!

Community Alert

Dunhill Community Alert Group were shortlisted for an award in the Community Safety section of the PPN Awards recently held in Dungarvan. This was not our year, and we congratulate the very worthy winners, RA River Rescue Group in the city, who give their time to keep the public safe. Well done to them — there’s always next year.

As we come to the year’s end, we thank all our friends and subscribers for your contribution over the year and ask you to keep an eye on vulnerable neighbours who may need a little help over the winter months. We also remind you that we’re available 24/7 should you need to call.

Contact: Donal, David, or John.
