Congratulations To Our U12 & Mayo

Congratulations to our U12 football team, who have qualified for the Division 3 Plate Final on 13th August. This is a wonderful achievement for this group, who came together this year. They have improved with every game they have played.

A big shout-out to our CNG lads, who helped Mayo celebrate their historic win in Westport on Sunday night. They might even get a job milking cows!

World Games

As part of the 2026 World Games held in Waterford, we were delighted to host the ladies and men’s teams from Montréal Qébec.

Members of the teams visited on the Friday evening to take in a match, trained in Dunhill on Sunday and joined us on the Tuesday evening for an evening of games, music, food and plenty chat between two nations known for their friendliness.

A special congratulations to the Quebec ladies who won the Division 2 Shield and a big thank to everyone who contributed to the wonderful evening.

Dunhill GAA Club extends its sincere condolences to Frances, Terence, Noel and Mick on the passing of one of our most popular members, Jimmy Guiry.

Still Plenty Left in the Legs – Join Waterford at Knees That Craic 2027

Think your hurley or football boots are long retired? Think again.

Knees That Craic is inviting more Waterford players to pull on the jersey and experience one of the most enjoyable weekends in the Masters GAA calendar. The 2027 Over 40 Masters Global Cup takes place in Las Vegas on Saturday, 30th January 2027, over the St Brigid's Bank Holiday weekend.

Founded in 2023, Knees That Craic brings together hurling and Gaelic football players aged 30 to 99 from Ireland, North America and beyond. It's about staying involved in the games we love, renewing old friendships, making new ones, and proving there's still plenty of life left in the legs.

The tournament strikes the perfect balance—competitive on the pitch, relaxed and social off it. Whether you're lining out alongside old teammates or meeting players from across the world, it's a weekend built around great games, great stories and even better company.

Building on the recent World Games in Waterford, every entry helps support the growth of Gaelic games in North America, with all proceeds going towards collegiate hurling and Gaelic football programmes.

Waterford has already been well represented by PJ McGrath, Dermot Dunphy and Paul Doyle, and organiser and Dunhill native Vinny Comerford would love to see even more Déise players and teams make the trip in 2027.

Whether you've been retired for five years or twenty, this is your chance to dust off the boots, enjoy the craic, and be part of something that's becoming a highlight of the Masters GAA calendar.

Fenor GAA

Fenor Becomes Little Italy

Italy’s finest Gaelic footballers were feted at a “Fáilte go Fionnúir” twinning event with a twist on Tuesday, July 14th. And it’s safe to say the Azzurri’s GAA World Games representatives enjoyed themselves immensely — heading home singing songs and proudly wearing Fenor jerseys!!

“Fresh” from their exertions in Carriganore — where they are competing in the international and open football competitions — the mix of Italians and ex-pats trained in sun-kissed William Flynn Park before being given a taste of our local heritage sport of road bowling.

Liam Power, the game’s pillar in these parts, kindly organised a long throw competition at Ballyscanlon. The craic was mighty as the touring party tried their hand at firing bullets along the Lake Road (complete with “Benvenuti” and “Fáilte” markings).

Some seriously impressive newcomers took to it like a duck to water, while a few bowls went in dodgier directions, keeping ‘Skinner’ and his metal detector busy! There were even a few extra ‘shots’ handed out (going down a treat by all accounts) and medals for the best of the bunch — a lovely touch.

Ready for added refreshments, everyone eagerly adjourned to Mother McHughs for a welcome spread of food and a few toasts. There was a lovely atmosphere as visitors and locals mixed, backed by traditional music from Eoghan Dunphy & friends, as well as a keenly observed World Cup semi-final.

At half-time, Fenor chairman Wally O’Neill said a few words, saying how delighted we were to host such an amiable group. He then presented all 29 touring players with a very special Fenor jersey each to mark the occasion — something they were blown away by, chanting each recipient up for their photo op with our very own Waterford senior hurler, Sean Mackey.

Team Italy liaison person, Kerryman Ronan Brosnan, sincerely thanked Fenor for its generosity and hospitality to members of Rome Hibernia GAA and Gaelic Football Milan, as well as camogie players competing with other regions. As a first-time visitor to Waterford, and staying in Bonmahon, he was struck by the beauty of the Copper Coast and the reception they’d received here.

Rome Hibernia chair/midfielder Gianni Goretti, on behalf of the indigenous members of the Italia Calcio Gaelico party, handed over one of their brand-new blue jerseys, only revealed on the eve of their arrival in Ireland — but with more matches to play before the weekend (the Italians all wore the green and white into the SETU Arena the next morning), they weren’t parting with the rest of the gear!

Blessed by glorious weather and big crowds, the Games were a great success. Fair play to everyone across Waterford who hosted teams from all over the globe who fundraised to travel here for the experience. The Déise delivered in spades — and Fenor, as usual, that bit differently.

✨ Our own committee and family members for answering the call with arrangements, fetching, sponsorship, meal prep and service, their time, and more (especially Anne Marie, Amy & Emma, Mags, Marise, Joanne, and Maria on culinary duty).

✨ Ann for making sure the jerseys were A1 as always (that’s one less kit for her to wash!).

✨ Sean & Mary behind the bar for the premises and their patience.

✨ All who gave lifts to get our guests from A to B and back to their lodgings safe and sound as a great night became a late night!

The GAA is an amazing organisation and that’s simply down to the volunteers — and their friends in the community — who together leave no stone unturned to make things happen on the ground.

A proud day for the parish. Go raibh maith agaibh go léir.

Hurling

Fenor hurlers await the Eastern semi-final pairings after the conclusion of the group phase.

We toughed it out against Clonea in Dunhill on the first Sunday in July to record a second win of the Junior A Championship on a scoreline of 2-19 to 1-18.

Credit to dynamic displays by Cian Rellis (0-7, 4f) and Mikey Nicholls (1-3), and terrific defensive work by James Hayden, Paul Condon and Richie Cullinane, along with fine shifts from wing-backs Fintan Walsh (0-1) and John Flynn, and the likes of Dylan Farrell, Ollie Buck and Jim Halley (0-2) around the central third.

Shipping a nasty knock after a scintillating early goal, Sean Mackey scored 1-2, including a free, and Niall Power converted four more.

Six days later, we booked our place in the knockouts with a hard-fought 1-18 to 2-12 victory over St Saviours in sweltering Walsh Park. Sean scored 10 points, six from play, while David Cantwell hit 1-2, Niall Power got three (one free), and Mikey, Corey Kennedy and Eric Lonergan added a point apiece.

Our best performers included Sean, full-back Cully, captain Hayden, and the half-back line, particularly Flynner and Fintan on the flanks.

Already through, we rested players with injuries in our final group game against Passage in Ballybeg on Monday, 20th July. Though we conceded 4-17 to our 0-17, there were encouraging displays from youngsters such as man-of-the-match Darragh Murphy (0-1), Ollie Buck (0-2), Dylan Farrell (0-1) and Fintan Walsh (0-1). Ollie St John got three points from play in the first half, while Niall Power shot seven, five from placed balls.

Condolences

Fenor club and community are among the many with fond memories of the late Jimmy Guiry, Ballymorris.

Jimmy was known far and wide for his generosity, decency and good humour. He couldn’t do enough for people and freely gave of his time and know-how gained from his upbringing in Johnstown, Kilmeaden, his years as a mechanic in Hennessy’s Garage and Mount Congreve, his love of motors and Hot Rod, his time as a popular ambulance and bus driver (clocking up umpteen school runs and legendary club trips), and his GAA playing days with Ballyduff Lower and later Dunhill, where he also served on the committee.

Jimmy’s son Noel won Eastern medals and a county junior hurling title with Fenor in 2015. His father had been a busy physio to a somewhat injury-prone team in the early part of the millennium.

His seasons as Fenor First Aid man included 2001, the year corner-back Finley Weir got married. Hearing of his passing on Friday, Finley remembered how Jimmy mowed the grass for him the day before his wedding and arrived down to the afters with a present. He was that sort of person.

May Jimmy Rest In Peace. Our sincere sympathies to all the family.

Sympathies also to Stan Flynn — long-time former player, committee member, officer, club referee and Eastern/County Board delegate — and extended family, on the sad passing of his father Michael, Moonamelagh, on Tuesday, July 14th.

Formerly of Moonamintra, just outside Waterford, Michael was a person of great intellect and humour. Widely respected in the farming community, he was a devoted family man and kind neighbour who made a major contribution to his adopted parish.

Condolences also to Mrs Flynn, Iris, Breeda, Georgina and Ciaran, Michael’s daughters/sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Fenor Road Bowling Club

Busy month again, with a lot of travelling due to the fixtures backlog for the All Irelands, where our distance from the other areas really comes into play. The south-west area of Cork is a long way from our little village in East Waterford, but we keep flying the flag and keeping our club out there competing.

Father & Daughter Bow Out of Championship

Anna Power, after a strong win in her own region and then beating the City representative, met the reigning U18 All-Ireland champion, who is still U16, in the Munster quarter-final. Experience and long travel times will be learning curves to take from this score, which Maebh had in abundance, but it was a great achievement to have our club getting mentions in bowling publications such as the Southern Star and the Cork Examiner.

Her dad, Liam Power, after winning the Novice D Section A, lost the overall final on a last-shot shoot-out by distance to his opponent, Aston Walsh from the Clashmore Club, so will not go on to represent the region, which may be a blessing in disguise, he discloses.

The Novice E section will start to kick off for our remaining four players: Blaine Toner, Padraic O’Leary, Paddy Flavin and Kieran.

We had a great meeting with the Fenor GAA hosts, Team Italy, who had a long-shot competition within their own group. They also may have had some liquid shots to help steady their hands! The overall winner was Fraser, originally from Glasgow, who threw an impressive 110 metres from his best of three shots, proving that sport can integrate people well.

Thanks to Jamie and all the Fenor GAA lads for letting us join in this momentous occasion. The night afterwards, as always, was a great success.

St. Anne’s Retain U12A Camogie Title

A thrilling final in Kilmacthomas saw St Anne’s take on a strong Gailltír side in a fantastic contest. The fiercely determined St Anne’s girls showed incredible heart and resilience, battling right to the final whistle to successfully retain the U12A Camogie title.

Pauline and Paul O’Loughlin presented the Jean O’Loughlin Cup to joint captains Lucy Gooney and Dearbhla Costello, who was also deservedly named Player of the Match.

It is especially lovely to have Jean’s Memorial Cup back in the club once again.

Congratulations to all the girls on a wonderful achievement, and well done and thanks to their mentors, Carolyn Walsh, John Walsh, PJ McGrath, Leah McGrath, and Ger Murphy, for their hard work throughout the season. ❤️💚

Beach Fun Day 2026

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday for our second Boatstrand Beach Fun Day 2026! What a fantastic day it was.

From the kids' races, sandcastle competition, mini raft race, raft race, paddleboard race, gladiator knock-off and, to finish the day, an epic tug of war with everyone on the beach, both young and old, taking part, there was something for everyone.

An event like this simply wouldn't be possible without the incredible support of our volunteers. There are far too many people to name individually, but we want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who gave their time and helped throughout the day.

A special mention to Elaine Walsh from An Duine Beag Montessori, who kindly sponsored the food. Thank you to our amazing BBQ team, who kept everyone well fed with delicious food; our star baker, who arrived with her delicious creations; to Donna for keeping everyone informed throughout the day on the megaphone and helping organise the races; to Greg Lonergan for creating such a brilliant atmosphere with his singing; and to Marie from the campsite, who gave him a helping hand so he could take a short break from the mic while she entertained everyone with a few songs.

We can't forget to thank Shane Keane, who was our Grand Marshal for both the mini raft race and the main raft race.

Finally, thank you to everyone who came along to support us. Seeing so many families and friends enjoying the day together made all the hard work worthwhile.

Swimming Lessons

Enrolment for Boatstrand takes place on Saturday, 1st August, from 10.00am to 11.00am in Boatstrand.

Alternatively, you can enrol at the National Lifeguard Training Centre, Tramore (X91 PY24), from Monday to Friday, 10.00am to 3.00pm. Payment must be made at the time of enrolment. The fee is €50 per child.

Registration for Ardmore will take place in Ardmore Community Hall on Saturday, 1st August, from 3.00pm to 5.00pm.

All classes will begin on Monday, 3rd August, at 10.00am.

Community Alert

Appeal For Your Help

The picnic table gifted to Annestown in 2006 by The Copper Coast European Geopark was vandalised between Thursday, 9th July and Friday, 10th July.

The design on the table is unique to the area, as it specifically represents the nearby section of Annestown's Copper Coast. The table has sat there proudly for the past 20 years, hosting picnics and barbecues, and providing a lovely place to sit awhile and admire the beauty of the sea.

The people of Dunhill, Fenor, Boatstrand and Annestown are very proud of their little corner of the earth and are deeply offended by the antisocial and shameful behaviour of the individual (or individuals) who carried out this damage. Let it be said that this was not the work of children—a heavy rock was used to smash the table.

Community Care & Social Hub

The Dunhill–Fenor Community Care & Social Hub annual day trip headed off on Thursday, 2nd July, with a full bus of 52 happy travellers picked up in Tramore, Fenor and Dunhill. As always, there was great excitement from the moment the bus set off – after all, a day out with friends is always something to look forward to!

Our first stop was the Arboretum Home & Garden Heaven in Carlow, where everyone enjoyed tea, coffee and refreshments before taking their time browsing the beautiful garden centre and shops. It has to be said that there were more than a few bags making their way back onto the bus afterwards!

Next stop was Langton's Hotel in Kilkenny for a delicious lunch, where nobody left hungry. The afternoon was made even more enjoyable with wonderful music and singing from Michael Dunphy and Angela Dalton, who had plenty of toes tapping, hands clapping and voices joining in.

Of course, no Community Care bus trip would be complete without Bernie's travelling tuck shop! There was a generous supply of sweets, bottles of water and jellies. She had even thought of the Jelly Babies for John Drohan – now that's planning ahead!

The day was filled with laughter, chat, music, friendship and lots of craic. A sincere thank you to everyone who helped organise another memorable outing, to our bus driver for getting us there and back safely, to Michael and Angela for the music, and to all who travelled and made it such an enjoyable day.

Here's to the next adventure!

The very popular Social Hub is taking a break over the summer months and will return in September. Held on the third Thursday afternoon of each month, it is a warm and welcoming place to meet old friends and new.

It is open to everyone living in or from the Copper Coast area, including Annestown, Boatstrand, Bonmahon, Dunhill, Kill and Stradbally. No age limits.

Speaking of the café, it's open Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm, so drop in for a coffee and a bite to eat.

Our Datacentre is also open and stocked with plenty of books, perfect for finding your next summer read.

From September, we're running free Digital Skills Training every Wednesday at 10am in Dunhill and Thursday at 10am in Kilmacthomas.

As always, our Community Garden is thriving, with fresh vegetables, herbs and a lovely outdoor space for the community to enjoy together.

Tiny Tots

Tiny Tots is looking forward to welcoming our new learners this September. At Tiny Tots, we embrace learning through play.

Learning through play is one of the most effective ways for preschool children to develop important skills. Through play, children explore their environment, solve problems, express creativity, and build confidence while having fun.

Play supports all areas of development:

• Physical development: Running, climbing, building and drawing improve both gross and fine motor skills.

• Social and emotional development: Playing with others teaches children how to share, cooperate, take turns and manage their emotions.

• Language development: Singing songs, listening to stories and engaging in pretend play help children build vocabulary and communication skills.

• Cognitive development: Puzzles, counting games, sorting activities and imaginative play encourage thinking, reasoning and problem-solving.

Examples of learning through play include:

• Building with blocks to explore shapes, balance and creativity.

• Role-playing in a pretend shop or home to develop language and social skills.

• Painting, drawing and crafting to encourage self-expression.

• Outdoor games that promote physical fitness and teamwork.

• Sensory play with sand, water or playdough to develop curiosity and fine motor skills.

Dunhill Tidy Towns

A lot of touch-up painting work was completed in the village, and many thanks to those involved.

The road and path verges on the road from the village to the Anne Valley were weeded, relaid and grassed. This was done on the advice of an ecologist, who felt that low-grown grass verges would complement the stone wall.

The old display board near the recycling bins was removed, as it had weathered badly over the years. We are in the process of erecting a new board and would welcome ideas and old photos of the village.

As ever, new members are welcome to support Tidy Towns whenever they can, as the level of involvement is completely up to each individual.
