ARTS, HERITAGE & CULTURE

Heritage Keepers

Place Day Event

The Dunhill Heritage Keepers Task Group held a Dunhill Heritage Place Day in Parish Hall on Sunday 6th  April from 1.30 to 6 pm.

The Place Day involved an array of exhibitions organised by 22 local organisations displaying their heritage stories. The day started off with the official opening of the an old village well dating back to the 18th  century.

Everyone then moved into the hall to view the exhibitions. Over 400 people attended creating a very vibrant social atmosphere in the hall. The organisers were very satisfied with the response from the general public.

Along with exhibitions two different trad music groups performed at sessions. The entertainment also included  the church choir and a one person drama act. The day concluded with a music session from the Dunphys, Shanaclune.

Tina Schley, Fenor attended as photographer taking many photos and producing a short  video of the day's activities.

Many thanks to all who helped out in making the day such an outstanding success.

The Dunhill Heritage Keepers Committee included Martin Sheehan Team Lead, Donal Lehane, Deirdre Woodbyrne, Liz Clooney, Juliana Menezes, Helen Laffan, Michael Veale and Senan Cooke.

Field Trip

A small group of Dunhill Heritage Keepers went on a Field Trip sponsored by Burrenbeo on April 12th. The field trip entailed a guided tour by bus of Enniscorthy, Vinegar Hill, and Oulart by an experienced guide: Catty Keane ( owner of Wexford Heritage Tours).

Of particular interest and indeed inspiration for the team was meeting with the Oulart Heritage keepers. They took us on a guided tour and explained how they worked to maintain and restore heritage sites. They also explained how they had acquired an old cottage and renovated it using voluntary labour to turn it into a Story House. This involves regular weekly music, story and presentation sessions.

Dunhill Players

Back Row: Cormac Daniels, Killian Power, Darragh Griffin, Aidan Griffin, Anne Marie Queally, Jonathan Whelan, Martin Harney, Lousie Walsh, Ellie Swift, Maisie Power, Finbarr Buckley, Sophie Mulcahy, David Swift, Ann Barry, Ciara Larkin Burns. Front Row: David Walsh, Jonathan Ryan, Mary Harney, Katie O Hara & Mary O Hara. Missing from photo: Thomas Griffin.

The Dunhill Players were back on stage recently with their latest production of Many Young Men of Twenty by John B. Keane – and what a show it was. Directed by Mary Harney, the cast had the crowd laughing, singing, and holding their breath all in the space of two hours. The performances were excellent, with a great mix of humour and heart, and the full house each night showed just how much people appreciate good local drama.

This play has a special place in Dunhill’s history – Jacqueline Kennedy came to see it back in 1967! That same buzz was in the air again this time around, with neighbours, friends, and families all coming together for a great night out. A big well done to everyone involved – it was community spirit at its best.

Local Book Launch

Sorcha Hartley launched her second book as gaeilge 'An Féachaint Siar' in Harneys Pub on Tuesday 29th April. The event was very well attended. The book is priced at €10 and all proceeds sent to UNICEF, a very worthy cause at this time of such destruction, war and climate disasters in a number of locations world wide.

Swim For Cora Griffin

Hello everyone, we have had several enquires about Cora’s swim this year and we are delighted to let ye know it will be going ahead this Sunday May 4th at 1pm in Annestown beach. Music and refreshments in Harneys afterwards.

After a very hard decision we decided not to do the swim for a charity this year and decided to do it solely to remember Cora. After starting the Charity event in 2018 Swim for Cora has raised nearly €100,000 for several different charities over the years. A lot of very special people helped us for the swim over the years but I feel it’s important to mention how amazing the Griffin family have been to be able to turn such a heartbreaking tragedy into something so amazing these last few years, ye are truly amazing people.

We hope to see you all Sunday 4th to remember Cora once again.
