Masters Football - Waterford & Limerick

Continued best wishes to Mark Nugent and Waterford’s Masters footballers, who had strong showings in their recent championship fixtures. Round 2 saw them secure a convincing 2-13 to 1-4 win over Wicklow in Kill.

In Round 3 at Kirwan Park in Touraneena, Waterford put in another good performance against Limerick. Despite missing several key players, the Déise started brightly and pushed Limerick all the way. Final score: Limerick 3-7, Waterford 1-7.

John Day at the Deise Og Talent Academy at SETU

Congratulations also to John Day and the Waterford U16 hurlers on their opening Championship clash against Antrim in Dublin last weekend, where they came away with a well-deserved win.

Fenor GAA

Brill U8 Blitz

Well done everyone involved in a super morning of football and fun in sunny Fenor last Saturday, June 21 for the U8 Blitz. Thanks to Michael O'Brien for organising this county-wide blitz with Déise Óg and to Derek Farrell & Mick Murphy for dealing with the logistics on the day.

County League Final

Tramore 0-21 Fenor 2-11
Fenor lost little in defeat to a fine Tramore side in a keenly contested All-County League Division 3 final in St Saviour’s on Saturday, June 14.
The victors led by 11 points to 4 at the break, aided by eight frees. But Fenor started the second half at a gallop and rapidly scored 1-2 without reply (Darragh Murphy squeezing in a well-worked goal) to cut the deficit to just two.
Though Tramore pulled away again, Fenor rallied and produced a strong finishing kick to send over a succession of points, and the excellent Sean Mackey also converted a penalty. But with the seasiders landing a couple of crucial two-pointers, we couldn't bridge the gap, coming up four short.
Well done to Tramore, a team with lots of quality. But credit to Fenor’s youngsters who were among our outstanding performers on the day, including three players who were still sitting their Leaving Cert exams — Sean, Dylan and Fintan.
FENOR Team & Scorers: Michael Mooney; Richie Cullinane, Jim Halley, Fintan Walsh; Eric Lonergan, John Heffernan, Mikey Nicholls (0-1); Darragh Murphy (1-0), Ollie Buck; Dylan Farrell (0-1), James Hayden (c, 0-3), Daithí Purcell; Sean Mackey (1-3), Richard Lynch (0-1), Iarla Hennessy.
Subs used: Eoin Nolan (0-1), Ollie St John (0-1), Paul Condon.
Management: Mick Murphy, Derek Farrell, Eoin O'Neill. (Jamie O’Keeffe]

Deise Draw

The 2025 Waterford GAA Déise Draw offers over €126,000 in cash prizes across 5 draws, starting on July 4th.
Five Fenor buyers won €2,250 in cash between them last year, but with an increased minimum sales target (as an intermediate club), we'd greatly appreciate your continued support.
The 63% the club receives from each €100 ticket sold will be invested in rolling out plans to improve our playing & training facilities at William Flynn Park.
To enter and support Fenor, please contact Treasurer Wally O'Neill or see Chairman Kevin Burns — or indeed any committee member/player. Many thanks in advance and best of luck.

First, they travelled to Portlaw and played a blitz kindly hosted by @portlawcamogieclub.

Dunhill NS Under 13 Camogie

Congratulations to the U13 girls at Dunhill NS for their recent participation in the Allianz Cluichí Cheannais Cumann na mBunscol Oirthear Phort Láirge (Finals) held at Walsh Park. It was Dunhill NS versus Seafield NS in the final, and the camogie girls delivered a remarkable performance, scoring an impressive 8 goals that clinched their well-deserved victory. They returned to a hero’s welcome in the school, with Captain Aisling proudly displaying the winning shield.

Player Of The Month Awards

Under 14 Waterford

Well done to our U14 players Ella, Evie, Julie, Heather, Laoibhse, and Muireann, who played on the U14 Waterford Blue & White squads in Rathkeale yesterday.
The Blues played Limerick and Tipperary, while the Whites played Tipperary and Galway. Each squad then contested their respective shield final.
The Blues overcame Galway in an exciting game, holding off a very late comeback, while the Whites were unlucky to be pipped by Limerick in an extremely close and toughly contested encounter.

Well done, girls!

New Memoir

Unedited – Story of an ‘Irish’ Orphan by Polina Ismailova

Originally from Belarus, Polina came to stay with the Dunphy family in Dunhill in 2002, at just nine years old, through Chernobyl Aid Ireland’s Rest and Recuperation programme.

She became such a cherished part of the family that she took the Dunphy surname and now refers to John and Michele Dunphy as her parents. Polina later returned to Waterford, where she married and now lives permanently with her husband Alex and daughter Olivia.

Her memoir explores trauma, abandonment, and poverty, but also the kindness, love, and warmth she found in Ireland. The book is available online and at The Book Centre, Waterford.

Community Care & Social Hub

Senan Cooke & Mai Ryan Birthdays [Photo: Helen Laffan]

There was no shortage of laughter, cake, or toe-tapping tunes at the Community Care Social Hub on Thursday last, 19th June.

The group were delighted to welcome back two of their own, Mamie Smith, who is on holiday from America, and Joan Twyford, who was on holiday from Dublin. Whether they came back for the tea and cakes or the company remains unconfirmed, but their presence added to the joy of the day.

The celebration turned up a notch as two milestone birthdays were marked: Mai Ryan and Senan Cooke (we won’t say the number, but let’s just say the candles needed their own fire permit). Both Senan and Mai entertained everyone with their off-the-cuff comedy act, speaking of the comments they get about how well they look!

Entertainment was provided by not one, not two, but three musicians — one local talent, Michael Dunphy, and two bright young stars, Thomas and Mark Flood from Co. Longford, who were visiting with their grandmother, Joan Twyford, a proud native of Dunhill. The young ones stole the show (and a few hearts). Joan and her daughter, Marie, then entertained the group dancing to ‘Shoe the Donkey’.

All in all, it was an afternoon filled with great craic, great company, and great music. The Community Care Social Hub continues to be the place where great memories are made!

Get ready for a fun-filled outing! Dunhill Fenor Community Care is organizing its annual Day Trip on Thursday, 3rd July 2025, and all are welcome to join.

John Drohan, Mary Power, Bernie Queally, Rita McDonald, John McDonald, Helen Laffan, Dan Cowman, Mai Sullivan, Willie Hanley, Pat Green, Denise Allen, Sarah Lonergan, Joan Lehane, and Kathleen Power.

Let’s make it a memorable day for our community!

EDUCATION & LEARNING

Dunhill Multi-Education Centre

Supported by SOLAS REACH Funding and WWETB, the Dunhill Community Garden runs every Friday from 10:00 to 13:30 at the polytunnels and outdoor area behind Block B, Dunhill EcoPark – X91 FVF9.

We welcome the Ukrainian community and local residents each week to develop horticultural and language skills in a friendly, inclusive space. The garden promotes adult learning, integration, and helps reduce rural isolation.

We grow a wide range of vegetables, fruit, flowers, and herbs—currently planting tomatoes and cucumbers in the tunnels. Raised beds are thriving with garlic, potatoes, onions, salad leaves, rhubarb, peas, and beans. Herbs like sage, thyme, coriander, parsley, basil, dill, and mint are also grown, many overwintered to show how the season can be extended.

We focus on seasonal, local, pesticide-free growing. All welcome!

📞 Call 051 396 934 or drop by any Friday, 10:00–13:30.

Pick up a ‘bioregional address card’ up from Dunhill EcoPark - at the reception or drop by the Bioregioning office and we’ll show you how to use it. Be someone who can answer ‘where to you live’ by referring to the natural place you belong! Send it in the post or bring it along to the OMAPPING event on Sunday 29th.

Dunhill Tidy Towns

Nice piece of stonework tidied up by Percy Dunphy [Photo: Martin Sheehan]

A nice piece of stonework was tidied up by Percy Dunphy at the Ballynageeragh bend. The road and ditches leading from the Anne Valley were also worked on by the team, and all verges were sprayed to control weed growth. Additional plants were planted in front of the village hall. Big, big thanks to the Dunhill Players for their generous donation to Dunhill Tidy Towns.

Waterford Council

Improvement works are now underway on the coast road near Boatstrand, with completion expected by September. The move follows erosion caused by a storm in April last year which caused part of the road to subside.

The works, funded by the Department of Transport under the Specific Grant scheme, aim to move the road away from the vulnerable cliff edge.

Trivia Question

Answer in next month’s edition.

Last Month’s Answer

Q: If a hen and a half lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many eggs will half a dozen hens lay in half a dozen days?

A: If a hen and a half lay an egg and a half in a day and a half, how many eggs will half a dozen hens lay in half a dozen days? Answer: 24 eggs. Explanation: One hen lays 1 egg in 1.5 days. So, 1 hen lays 2/3 of an egg per day. Therefore, 6 hens × (2/3 eggs/day) × 6 days = 24 eggs.
