Demographics Committee

Back - Benny Hurl (Committee Chair, Tyrone), Ed Stenson (Leitrim), Conor Weir (Croke Park, Cork), Colm Cummins (Offaly), Peter Horgan (Croke Park, Cork), Brendan Waters (Dublin) and Senan Cooke (Waterford)
Front - Shane O Flanagan (Croke Park), Minister Jerry Buttimer TD (Cork), Tom Ryan (Ard Stiurthoir, Carlow), An tUachtaran Jarlath Burns (Armagh), Minister Dara Calleary TD (Mayo) and Katherine Maughan (Mayo). Absent Kevin Lynch (Vice Chair, Kerry Co Board) and Paddy Kelly (Meath).

Senan Cooke has taken his seat on the GAA’s National Demographics Committee, a team looking at some of the biggest challenges facing the games – from falling rural populations to packed urban clubs.

The committee, chaired by Benny Hurl of Tyrone, recently met at Croke Park to dig into the latest numbers on births, club membership, and player participation. Their job is to find practical solutions – new facility strategies, smarter planning, and better support for struggling clubs – to make sure Gaelic games stay strong in every parish and town.

With voices from across Ireland at the table, Senan is now helping shape how the GAA responds to these population shifts – a vital task for the future of the games in Waterford and beyond.

A narrow loss, followed by a comprehensive defeat by Kilmac’ at the same venue last weekend, leaves Fenor — possibly feeling the effects of an intense few seasons — needing to beat Bonmahon in Kill next Sunday (throw-in 1pm).

Fenor Road Bowling

The club will be running the Jerry Cremin Memorial Tournament on October 25 at 11am over the bank holiday weekend. It’s an open draw so beginners are welcome.

Jerry, originally from Bantry and brother of senior bowler Justin, revived bowling in the area after moving to the village during the 70s. He is fondly remembered by generations of boys and girls from Fenor and further afield who were introduced to the Irish sport of Road Bowling by his friendly demeanour and patience.

All proceeds raised on the day will go to Lady Lane Retirement Services and Meals on Wheels in accordance with the wishes of the Cremin Family. All support on the day is welcomed and appreciated to remember our Honourary President.

  • Playing out from the village on the main road

  • Open draw for teams of 3, with the longest shot marked each time

  • 15 shots per team. Best 3 teams play back in the Final

  • Open to Novice C Grade or lower / social players

  • A Senior exhibition of 4 top Irish bowlers has been added to the line up

  • €20 entry including team event, Long Throw + BBQ

  • Longest Shot Competition

  • Fastest Shot Competition (Speed Gun)

  • Refreshments and prize-giving on the day in Mother McHugh’s Pub in Fenor, Waterford

Seaview Celtic

First Ever U13 Schoolgirls League Game

Seaview Celtic 3 – 0 Kilmacow
It was another historic day for the club today as our U13 girls played the first-ever Schoolgirls League game in Annestown beating Kilmacow on scoreline of 3-0. It was true Annestown conditions with wind and rain throughout, but the girls were not bothered by that as they put in an excellent, composed performance.

The first half required patience and discipline to keep the Kilmacow team at bay, and the solid Seaview backline defended excellently. The second half was a different story as Seaview went on the offensive, with plenty of slick passing and defence-splitting runs opening the game up and getting the goals to seal the win.

Well done to the girls today — they've been a huge addition to the club and are already making a big impression with their high standards when it comes to skill, commitment, and hard work.🔵⚪

Under 12s Clinch The Double

On Saturday, 13th September, both St. Anne’s U12 Ladies Gaelic Football teams traveled to Kilgobnet to take part in the Festival of Football, hosted by Waterford LGFA.

The day began with St. Anne’s B team taking on Ballymac in a thrilling final.

The girls delivered a performance full of resilience and skill, battling hard throughout the match. After a tense contest, they emerged as the well-deserved winners. It was the team’s first year playing together, and their progress has been exceptional — making this victory a fantastic way to wrap up their season.

Next, St. Anne’s A team faced Gaultir in their final. The game was a closely contested affair, with both teams giving everything on the field.

St. Anne’s were unlucky not to convert a few near-misses, but their composure and precision in key moments ultimately secured a hard-fought victory.

This win marked a historic achievement for the U12A team, who claimed back-to-back double victories in both Camogie and Football for the second year in a row — an extraordinary accomplishment for such a talented group.

Following their victories, both teams were treated to a celebratory meal at The Engine House in Bunmahon, ending with a spirited rendition of Killeagh on stage.

Congratulations to both teams and their dedicated coaches on a fantastic season. What a perfect way to end a busy year of competition!

Gaelic 4 Mothers and Others

St. Anne’s LGFA G4M&O (Gaelic for Mothers & Others) team played a blitz in Stradbally GAA on September 13th.

Nine teams came together in Stradbally from across the county:
Abbeyside, Ballymac, Comeragh Rangers, Kilrossanty, Mná Na Déise, Roanmore, St. Anne’s, Stradbally, and Tramore.

They had a great day! 🟢🔴

This is a non-competitive team for a bit of fitness, fun & friendship! No experience needed — new members always welcome!

Junior B LGFA

Hard luck to the St. Anne’s Junior B LGFA team, who faced Portlaw in the semi-final at Butlerstown GAA on Saturday, 20th. 🟢🔴

St. Anne’s opened with real intent, dominating the first 20 minutes and holding the lead. Unfortunately, Portlaw’s physicality began to show, and despite a strong effort, St. Anne’s couldn’t quite convert early goal chances that might have narrowed the gap.

Half-time score: St. Anne’s 0–4 | Portlaw 1–7
Full-time score: St. Anne’s 1–5 | Portlaw 4–15

Well done, girls — super proud of every single one of you. You worked hard and never gave up. 💪

A big thank-you to the team and management — Rosie Murphy, Naomi Doonan, and Kevin McHugh — for your dedication and effort throughout the year. It doesn’t go unnoticed. 🏐

As the late Bob recalled, Threshing Day was a major event, with all the family involved and neighbours lending a hand.

“The machine men would arrive for breakfast; the one who drove the steam engine had status. Children would watch, fascinated by the men working in pairs to keep the grain harvesting exercise in motion. After days of preparation, there was a sigh of relief afterwards, especially in the kitchen; the beer firkin well emptied.”

Family Fun Day

What an unforgettable day we had at Boatstrand Beach on August 23rd! 🎉 Thanks to Emma Lenihan’s brilliant idea, her endless behind the scenes work and the hard work of our amazing committee (huge shoutout to Allie Lenihan and Phillip Higgins), our very first Family Fun Day was a massive hit! And let’s not forget the weather — sunshine and good vibes all around! ☀️

We weren’t sure how many people would show up, but the beach was packed! It felt like one big happy family soaking up the sun, making sandcastles, and leaving only footprints in the sand. We truly couldn’t have asked for a better turnout! 😊

A big thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success and our star baker who has made delicious treats for every occasion. We’re sorry if we missed anyone, but you know who you are — you rock! 🙌

There was no shortage of fun activities for everyone to enjoy:
- Little Kids’ Races: These speedy little ones were unstoppable! Big thanks to Donna Mulcahy and Emma for organizing the races. 🏃‍♂️💨
- Water Races and Epic Water Balloon Fights: Because who doesn’t love a splash on a hot day? 🎯
- Sandcastle Competition: Not just your average sand pile — we saw some serious architectural masterpieces! 🏰
- Raft Race: These DIY rafts were surprisingly seaworthy — and Aoife Mooney kept us all safe on the water. 🚤
- Live Music: We had tunes all day long, making sure the vibes stayed high and the energy even higher! 🎶 Thanks Greg Lonergan
- BBQ Time: Burgers, sausages, drinks — the grill was smokin’! Special thanks to Phillip and Caterine Higgins, and Catherine Mary O’Brien for cooking up a storm. And shoutout to Mairead Bonnar for helping keep the cooks cool and hydrated. 🍔🌭
- Marquee Fun: Huge thanks to Edmond Murphy for bringing the marquee and grill to keep us all shaded and fed.
- Family Day Sign: The sign was perfect! Thanks to Tommy and Rebecca Cronin for making it look amazing. ✨
- Tug of War: Spoiler: It was INTENSE! Big thanks to Cillian and Colm Bonnar for leading the charge. 💪
- Fitness Challenges: Who knew we had so many strong and competitive folks in our community?! 💥

And if that wasn’t enough, this summer we opened The Coffee Dock, our brand-new community shop, where delicious treats are served up all summer long! ☕🍩 Big thanks to Allie for putting in so much effort with our teenage shop keepers and keeping the shop stocked.

(Photo: Saoirse Bonnar)

Thanks to YOUR generosity, we raised a grand total of €1,815.50 for the Bonmahon Lifeboat, helping to keep our beautiful coastline safe. High fives all around — we did this together! ✋👏

What a day! Time truly flies when you’re having fun, and we can’t wait to do it all over again next year. Until then, let’s keep the community spirit going strong. Hope to see you all next summer for another unforgettable Family Fun Day at Boatstrand Beach!

Copper Coast Christmas Market

The very popular Christmas Market will take place on Sunday, 30th November at Dunhill Community Hall. As usual, we will have a wide range of stalls including jewellery, crafts, food and more.

We're always interested to hear from new businesses and artisans who want to share their products. You can message Friends of Dunhill Hall on FB or Insta, or email [email protected].

Addiction Awareness & Wellness Talk

On Tuesday, 7th October at 7:30pm in Dunhill Community Hall, DFBA Community Enterprises CLG will host a free talk on Addiction Awareness & Wellness. The talk will be of particular interest to parents, those working with young people in our community, as well as young people themselves.

Drug use and addiction can end up touching many of us, our friends, and our family. It’s often something we worry about or struggle with alone. As a community, having a greater awareness and understanding means we can help.

The evening is an opportunity to hear from those who have journeyed through addiction to recovery and those who work with people on that journey. Speakers on the evening will include: George Henderson, Eoin Dunphy, and Alan Kissane.

Dunhill Church

Dunhill Church Choir will be starting back after the summer break on Monday, 15th September, and each Monday night at 8 p.m. in the church.

We’d all love to have new members come along. So if you’re even half thinking about it—STOP! Don’t think anymore, just come along and join us.

No auditions, no pressure, just plenty of laughs, new friends, and the joy of singing.

It’s not a huge time commitment. We practice once a week, and we sing at a few Masses during the year, including Christmas.

If you know of anyone else who might like to join, please feel free to share this message.

Giants’ Steps to Viking Shores: Cycling for Community, Health, and Local Food

Last week, a determined group of cyclists embarked on a journey that went far beyond covering miles on the road. The “Giant Steps to Viking Shores Cycle”, organised by Colman Power of Organic Fitness, Brendan Guinan of Fiorbhia Farm, and Meg Tissington of Tiss Solutions Development, took riders from the Giant’s Causeway to Waterford’s Viking shores.

Along the route, participants visited regenerative and organic farms, met local growers, and carried a powerful message: support local, eat local, and live healthy.

The journey’s final stop was Barefoot Farm, a mixed salad farm currently undergoing organic conversion, based at Eco-Park, Dunhill. Paul Ryan led a lively farm walk, answering questions and sharing stories of the farm’s evolution—from square-foot gardening to full-field cultivation. Afterwards, the cyclists enjoyed a meal of Brendan’s pork, crackling, and eggs paired with Paul’s fresh salads, expertly prepared by Shirley, Elaine, and Grainne from Dunhill Education Centre, and capped off with a delicious cheesecake made by Peg, Colman’s mother.

The initiative was supported by Healthy Waterford, a local programme delivered by Waterford City & County Council under the national Healthy Ireland framework, and was warmly celebrated by the community. A special mayoral welcome greeted the cyclists as they arrived at The Mall, Waterford City, marking the triumphant end of their journey.

NATURE & ENVIRONMENT

Dunhill Tidy Towns

We cleared the verge running from the Anne Valley to the village and planted 120 small creeper plants. This verge is very hard to maintain, so hopefully these plants will provide cover and colour!

Many thanks to Margaret from Easter Island Garden Centre for her advice on the variety of creepers to plant.

A touch of the Dunhill colours was also added to the village as the old water pump was painted. The pump is nicknamed "Kruger" — if anybody knows why, let us know!

As ever, we are looking for supporters to lend a hand now and again.

Waterford Council

Coast Road Realignment

Extensive road improvement works have been taking place on County Waterford’s Coast Road (R675), the scenic route that links Tramore and Dungarvan.

Following a storm event in April of last year, a combination of heavy rainfall and wave overtopping caused erosion to the cliff face in the Boatstrand area. In response, Waterford City and County Council outlined its intention to realign the road away from the cliff face in the medium to long term.

A newly aligned section of the route has now opened, providing improved safety for road users, while some work is continuing in the surrounding area.
