COMMUNITY & SUPPORT

Comhar Comaraigh Network

L - R. Catherine Power, Waterford Area Partnership; Richie Walsh, Waterford City & County Council; Ciara Bates, Principal Officer, Dept.  of Rural & Community Development; Liam Horan, Connected Communities, Western Development Commission;  Minister Mary Butler TD; John Logue, SERI Donegal; Senan Cooke, Dunhill Rural Enterprises CLG; Liam Quinn, CEO, Waterford Area Partnership; Eoin Morrissey, Healthy Waterford, WC &CC; Angela Mulcahy, Kill; Deirdre Woodbyrne, Comhar Comaraigh; Christine Rossi, CEO, Waterford Leader Partnership;  Professor Felicity Kelliher, SETU; Liz Riches, Waterford Area Partnership.

Comeragh Community Network (CCN) was established in 2024 as a three-year pilot project, requiring a full-time coordinator to get it off the ground. Its goal is to create a collaborative network of communities where members, where relevant, work together to enhance the Comeragh area.

📍 The Comeragh District stretches from Annestown/Dunhill to Ballymacarbry/Touraneena-Sliabh gCua. We have identified:
✔ 22 villages
✔ 30 social enterprises
✔ 25 GAA, Camogie, and Ladies Football clubs
🏑 Dunhill & Fenor GAA and St Anne’s Camogie & Ladies Football Club are included.

All voluntary groups across the region, including local initiatives such as Ecopark, Fenor Bog, Anne Valley, and the four villages of Dunhill, Fenor, Boatstrand, and Annestown, can operate under the CCN umbrella if interested.

We have identified many untapped resources, opportunities, and funding streams, which are best accessed through a network with a full-time coordinator. The challenge is to unlock these valuable resources, and CCN aims to add real value—we welcome our future success being judged by results. 🌟

Community Alert

The Dunhill Community Alert Group AGM was held on Tuesday, February 25th, in the Community Hall. We would like to acknowledge and thank all those who attended the meeting.

We also extend our thanks to Gene Hourihane of Sunstream Energy Solutions, who gave an informative and worthwhile talk on the benefits of renewable solar energy.

The outgoing officers were returned unopposed: Donal Murphy, John Galloway, and David Foran.

Membership of the group remains €5 per person, and we encourage all members to support us. We also invite new members—please forward your name, membership fee, and phone number to any committee member to activate your account.

Our next meeting will be held in May.

NATURE & ENVIRONMENT

Dunhill Tidy Towns & Heritage Keepers

Waterford County Council has provided funding for new fencing on Ballinageeragh bend

📅 Date: Sunday, 6th April 2025
📍 Location: Dunhill Community Hall

Dunhill Heritage Keepers & Tidy Village groups will hold Heritage Place Day, taking place on Sunday, 6th April 2025, in the afternoon in Dunhill Community Hall.

The concept of a Place Day is rooted in the idea of celebrating and reconnecting with the unique character, history, stories, achievements and activities that define our locality. It provides an opportunity for community members to explore the heritage of our surroundings, deepen their sense of belonging, and strengthen local pride.

By highlighting the cultural, sporting, historical, community and environmental treasures of Dunhill, we aim to inspire renewed interest in preserving and sharing our collective past, and present for future generations.

This event is being hosted to:

Celebrate and showcase the built, cultural and natural heritage of Dunhill and its surrounding areas.

  • Strengthen community ties by bringing together residents, local organisations, and heritage enthusiasts.

  • Encourage participation in community, sporting, heritage, cultural and educational activities.

  • Waterford Council Heritage with the input from Tidy   Towns and Heritage Keeper has made a Dunhill Heritage Board which will be available in April.

  • The Council are also considering signs for Dunhill and Ballinageeragh Dolmen. The decision will be made by the end of March and is funding dependent.

  • Waterford County Council provided funding for new fencing on Ballinageeragh bend (see photo above). This will be erected by Tidy Town volunteers and the bend planted and decorated with decorative stone and with pollinator plants.

Interesting Places

Matthewstown Passage Tomb

Matthewstown Passage Tomb: A Hidden Gem of County Waterford

Location
Nestled just 1.6 km (1 mile) north of Fenor, the Matthewstown Passage Tomb offers sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, including a stunning vista of the Comeragh Mountains.

History
Dating back to between 2500 and 2000 BC, Matthewstown Passage Tomb is a fascinating piece of local history. Known locally as Thomas McCabe's Bed, it is believed that a local outlaw named Thomas McCabe once spent a night here—much like the legendary "Diarmuid and Gráinne's Beds" found throughout Ireland.

The tomb is part of a group of smaller passage tombs in County Waterford, sharing similarities with those in Cornwall and the Scilly Isles. This led to the term "Scilly-Tramore group," which suggests the tombs may have been built by seafarers from Cornwall.

Description
The tomb itself measures 4.5 meters (15 feet) in length and about 1.8 meters (6 feet) in width. It features two rows of five standing stones, or orthostats, that rise to about 1 meter (3.5 feet). The tomb is capped with four large stone slabs, completing this impressive and ancient structure.
