Congratulations to our U12 Football team who recently were crowned U12 Division 3 Shield winners. They had a super win over Brickey Rangers.  Well done to all the players, mentors & parents for their superb commitment this year. 

Co. Minor Hurling Champions Div. 1 Shield Final

𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗮 𝗚𝗮𝗲𝗹 𝟭-𝟮𝟯 𝗔𝗯𝗯𝗲𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝟮-𝟭𝟳 (𝗔𝗘𝗧) — Comeback heroes Clan na Gael came out on top after a thrilling extra-time battle to lift the County Minor Hurling Championship Division 1 Shield in rain-soaked and windswept Fraher Field last Tuesday week (Aug 25).

Despite an untimely break in the weather, this Division 1 decider more than lived up to expectations as spectators marvelled at an outstanding Man of the Match display from county minor Cian Delaney.

His remarkable tally of 1-19 (including 1-9 from play) inspired Clan na Gael to victory. The youngster’s first touch, pace, movement and deadly accuracy caused problems throughout, while his crucial goal in the first half of the extra period ultimately proved the difference between the sides.

The boys from Butlerstown, Dunhill and Fenor showed tremendous character and resilience to claim the spoils. Having trailed for much of the hour to a strong Abbeyside unit, they never lost belief. Wind-assisted in the second half, they gradually plugged the gap before Delaney's late free left the sides deadlocked at 2-13 to 0-19, forcing extra time.

The decisive moment came in the opening part of that extended period when Delaney finished to the net after excellent work from Ruairi Brennan. That goal gave Clan na Gael an advantage they would not relinquish, outscoring Abbeyside 1-3 to 0-3 during that crucial spell to establish a three-point cushion by the second change of ends.

While Delaney was imperious, Clan na Gael had strong performers throughout the field, both among the starting XV – including midfielder Eoin Farrell (so influential in the semi-final win over Lismore a week earlier) – and off the bench (Dan O’Neill introduced to good effect at half-time).

Captain Cillian Brennan led by example, while Ruairi Brennan chipped in with two important second-half points as well as assisting for the winning goal.

Despite conceding two early green flags to Abbeyside's Aaron Walsh, Clan na Gael kept their composure. Delaney accounted for all but one of their first-half scores and they trailed by just four points at the break, 2-6 to 0-8.

With the wind now at their backs, Clan na Gael built momentum. Delaney and Brennan combined to haul the sides level by the 39th minute, and although Abbeyside responded, Clan na Gael upped the pressure. An Alex Barry point brought the teams level again before Delaney's accuracy from both play and frees pushed his team ahead for the first time in the 56th minute.

Even when Abbeyside regained the lead late on, the CNG colours refused to yield. Delaney's hugely impressive long-range free deep into stoppage time sent the game into extra time and set the stage for his match-winning contribution.

It was then that the winners produced their best hurling when it mattered most. Delaney's goal and three additional points gave them a vital edge, which they defended courageously during fiercely contested closing salvos. Their discipline, work rate and sheer determination ensured what was a deserved result.

After the final whistle, Clan na Gael celebrated a memorable triumph before County Board Chairman Neil Moore presented the shield to team captain Cillian Brennan.

Deise Draw

Congratulations to Damien Burns on winning the top prize in the August Deise Draw. The area had two more local winners in Noah Fanning and Joe Flynn. Well done to all.

Waterford Representation

Waterford Masters’ All-Ireland campaign came to an end in the Division One All-Ireland Masters semi-final in Kilcullen after a 3:18 to 1:10 defeat to a star-studded Dublin side, that was captained by Bernard Brogan and included Eoghan O’Gara, Kevin McMenamin, Denis Bastick and Ross McConnell.

Waterford can look back on an excellent campaign, finishing third in Division 1 after wins over Laois, Wicklow, Cork, Kildare and Westmeath, along with a draw against Limerick.

Well done Mark Nugent and to Fenor’s Michael O’Brien and Jim Halley on a fine campaign. 👏🔵⚪️

Well done to the four Clanna Gael players (Zack Butler, Marc Daly, Cian Cusack, and Cillian Delaney) who represented Waterford Under 16 Football Development squad against Tipperary and Cork in Kill during the month. The four boys played their last game last Saturday in Thurles against Clare. They have represented Clanna Gael from U14 to U16.

Positive Start For Fenor

Having been edged out in the Eastern hurling semi-final by now county champions Mount Sion, Fenor footballers got their Intermediate Championship tilt off to a winning start against Kilmac’ in Dunhill on a scoreline of 2-11 to 2-5 last Thursday (Aug 27).

Patrons were scant, but conditions were near-perfect, with not a puff of wind to be felt at O’Brien Park for once. We began brightly into the Sports Centre end, and a fortuitous early goal from point-seeking Sean Mackey, followed by a slight Cian Queally mishit that also confounded the keeper, had us six up by the seventh minute.

With Cian latching onto a super ball by full-forward John Flynn to raise our only white flag of the half, Kilmac’ gradually hauled back the deficit, aided by a penalty midway through.

And so, despite that tonic start and plenty of attacking threat, Fenor only led by the bare minimum at the break, 2-1 to 1-3 — mainly due to a handful of wides and as many shots dropped short or blocked. We also had a goal disallowed for an adjudged square-ball just before the short whistle after Sean seared through to place Mikey Nicholls to palm home.

Sufficient rust out of the system, we stepped things up in the second period, cutting down the unforced errors, defending with authority, countering swiftly through the lines — and, crucially, converting our chances.

Superbly taken points from Dylan Farrell, John Flynn, Mikey, Sean and Eoin Nolan, plus a brilliant Ollie Buck two-pointer and a pair of James Hayden frees, kept the scoreboard ticking over for Fenor.

With that, we’d built up a double-scores lead with six minutes left, and though Kilmac’ nicked a breakaway goal late on past the faultless Padraic O’Leary, Buck split the posts in stoppage time to seal a six-point win; 10 of those coming after the change of ends.

While the opposition were by no means at full pelt at this stage of the competition, it was encouraging to see the lads’ work-rate throughout after minimal prep.

We’d wholehearted displays in every sector, exemplified by Heffo, Cully and Mick in the full-back line, Paulie and Mikey in midfield, along with the fleet-footed Sean, Dylan, Fintan, Ollie, and Cian.

Thanks to everyone who has supported – and staffed – Siopa na Páirce at Fenor GAA grounds since it opened. With schools back, the shop will be open at weekends only and at any games in the field, including this Friday’s Kill vs Kilmac’ football fixture.

Fenor Road Bowling Club

Best of continued success to Paraic O’Leary, who is our last man standing in Nov E after Paddy Flavin bowed out to one of the surely favourites in this competition, Padraig Moloney, in a last-shot finish up in a midweek score in Clashmore. Gene Hourihan also has a two-bowl win in the Vintage category to put him in good stead.

Paddy can console himself with being part of the Waterford Team representing the Déise in the All-Ireland series in Westport on September 5th. A lot like a Scrabble in golf, teams take their best shot for distance among the three competitors’ efforts. When all three have taken 10 shots each, the winning team is the one furthest on distance.

The club will be copying this format for the Jerry Cremin Memorial event on October 24th also.

Congratulations to Oscar Flanagan from Dunhill on being selected for the Munster U18 rugby squad. It was a tough game against EIRA Rugby a very big American side with Munster coming out well on top in the end. Fantastic achievement! 🏉 🔴⚫️🟡 🏉

What an amazing Swim Week we had in Boatstrand!

Dunhill Tidy Towns

Some Thank Yous:

1. Thanks to Irish Water, who finished the stone wall at one of the entrances to the Wetlands. We had been in touch with them a number of times, but they were restricted by resources until recently.

2. Huge thanks to Waterford Council, who quickly repaired the portion of the village wall damaged by a vehicle. They did an excellent job.

Tidy Towns replanted 70 plants to replace those lost due to the damage.

Well done to Rachel Keane, who did herself, her family, Dunhill, and New Zealand incredibly proud during her time on the Rose of Tralee.🌹A fantastic achievement!

Local Story

Driving from Shanaclune into Dunhill village, I came across an old dog lying on the road. I knew the dog and its owner, and was surprised to see him there, as he seldom ventured out of his driveway.

I called to the owner to let them know, but there was no answer. As I drove back out the driveway, I found myself hemmed in by two cars that had stopped, along with the owner’s jeep. I could see the owner beside the dog, visibly upset and looking over at me. I grimaced sympathetically and drove on.

About fifteen minutes after getting home, it suddenly struck me: the owner might have thought I had called in to say I had knocked down the dog.

So I rang back.

“I'm so very sorry about the poor dog. I could see how upset you were — it was very sad. I just wanted to say that I didn’t knock him down. I called in to let you know he was lying on the road.”

The reply:

“Don’t worry. He’s running around the back garden. He just fainted in the heat, and a dish of water revived him.”

In Tribute

Sincere condolences to Maura, Joe, Marie, Susie, Niall, Charlie, Fred, Ned and the extended Kennedy and Moore families on the death of Martin Kennedy.

Martin won four senior football championships, including three in a row, and was named Footballer of the Year in 1967. He proudly wore the blue and white of Waterford.

His involvement with GAA continued throughout his life. He served as club secretary for a period and was a founder member of the underage club, St Mary’s, where he also served as secretary and football coach.

Martin was a dedicated community worker and a master organiser of social and fundraising events. He was involved in card drives, mini concerts, summer festivals, sales of work and much more, always willing to give his time and energy for the benefit of others.

He was a member of the Scór team that won the county Novelty Act with ‘To Kill or Cure’. Martin was also a fine singer and was involved with the church choirs in Kill and Dunhill. On the many social occasions when asked for a song, he was always ready to oblige.

Martin spent his working life in Kilmeaden Co-op, in administration and as shop manager. He was also involved in the production of three publications: Kilmeaden Co-op Centenary 1916–2016, with Jamie O’Keeffe; We Had A Ball – Matches, Music and Memories; and Kilbeg Creamery Memories – Hub of Rural Community for Eight Decades.

Martin left a unique legacy with family, working life, Kill community, Kill GAA and with so many other organisations and causes. May he rest in peace. (Senan Cooke)
